Silk Road Institute presents Ellen Gabriel (Kanien’kehá:ka Nation, Turtle Clan) an Indigenous human rights activist, chosen by the People of the Longhouse and her community of Kanehsatà:ke to be spokesperson during the 1990 “Oka” Crisis to share with the community a talk on Indigenous Rights and Universal Rights.
The talk will focus on the importance of building alliances and solidarity and aims to bring students and members of Montreal’s diverse communities together to reflect on the intersections of diverse struggles that are faced and garner support and solidarity in these issues. She will narrow in on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People and the talk will hopefully foster a critical discussion about the oppression of aboriginal communities as well as highlight similarities to oppressions faced by immigrant communities and other racialized peoples. Ellen Gabriel’s role as former head of the Quebec Native Women’s Association and her experience in addressing gender issues is all the more relevant in the current climate in the province that explicitly targets women of faith and women of colour.
