This opening panel, in French (with whisper translation into English), will explore diverse struggles of self-determination against oppression, making links between our collective organizing for justice and the interconnectedness of our struggles.
About the panelists:
Denise Jourdain and Elyse Vollant are from the Innu community of Uashat-Maliotenam on the Côte Nord; they are activists in opposition to Plan Nord and in defence of their ancestral lands and culture. Émilie Laliberté is part of Stella, a Montreal-organization founded in 1995 by and for sex workers. Laurence Parent organizes with the Regroupement d’activistes pour l’inclusion au Québec (RAPLIQ) for the defense of the rights of people with handicaps. Gabrielle Bouchard coordinates the Peer Support and Trans Advocacy Program at the Center for Gender Advocacy. Christina Xydous works at QPIRG Concordia and is an intersectional, anti-racist feminist and Montreal-based activist and organizer.

Rythm: From Not Racist to Anti-Racist

Rhythm is a workshop developed to revision anti-racist learning as ceremony, ritual, and remembrance. Activists and learners of all levels of experience will be guided through storytelling, meditation, and theatrical exercises in order to explore the realities of racism, racist violence, and racial privilege. Designed to provide participants with tools for critical self-reflection, self-care, and anti-racist intervention, Rhythm provides frameworks for identifying our own privileges, oppressions, and developing appropriate strategies for uncovering and confronting racism in community work. Based in a philosophy of rigorous self-exploration and healing work, the workshop excavates the notions of white guilt, reverse racism, and “colour-blindness”, grounding participants in a remembrance of colonial legacies. As some exercises are emotionally intense and may be triggering, participants are advised to choose their own level of participation and consider emotional readiness before attending.

Rhythme est un atelier développé afin de re-imaginer l’apprentissage anti-raciste comme cérémonie, rite et souvenir. Les participantEs seront guidéEs à travers les contes, la méditation, et des exercices théâtraux afin d’explorer les réalités du racisme, de la violence raciste, et du privilège racial. Mis sur pieds afin de donner aux participantEs les outils pour une réflection critique, pour le self-care et pour l’intervention anti-raciste, Rhythme offre des cadres de travail pour identifier nos propres privilèges, nos oppressions, et pour développer des stratégies pour dévoiler et faire face au racisme dans le travail communautaire. Basé sur la philosophie d’une étude rigoureuse de soi et de la guérison de soi, cet atelier exhume les notions de “white guilt,” du “reverse racism,” et du “colour-blindness.” Puis que certains de ces exercices sont intenses d’un point de vue émotionnel et peuvent être déclencheurs, les participantEs sont conseilléEs de choisir leur propre niveau de participation.

In the months since talk of the PQ government’s Charter of Values/Secularism began, we’ve seen a lot of speculation, a lot of strategy, and a lot of scary stuff happening in the public sphere. While the rights of marginalized religious groups and women are debated in the Assemblee Nationale and in the media, manifestations of racism are on the rise and many people consider leaving Quebec. In this discussion and workshop, Muslim women will discuss their perspectives on the heightened climate of racism in Quebec today, possible directions for Bill 60, and what can be done. Participants will be invited to work together to generate concrete strategies to resist Bill 60 and counteract the climate of racism.

Depuis les quelques mois depuis la proposition du gouvernement du PQ sur la Charte des Valeurs Québecoises/de la laïcité, nous avons été témoins de spéculation, de stratégies et d’évènements effrayants dans les espaces publics. Alors que les droits de groupes religieux marginalisés et de femmes sont discutés en Assemblée Nationale et dans les média, les expressions de racisme augmentent et plusieurs personnes pensent quitter le Québec. Dans cet atelier de discussion, des femmes Musulmanes parleront de leur perspectives sur la montée du racisme au Québec, des enjeux et directions liés au projet de loi 60, et des stratégies à développer. Les participantEs seront invitéEs à travailler ensembles afin de créer des moyens concrets pour s’opposer au projet de loi et de trouver des stratégies pour neutraliser et contrebalancer le présent climat de racisme qui règne au Québec.
