EGSS encourages its members to vote YES! in the Legal Information Clinic Fee Referendum

The Education Graduate Students’ Society encourages its members to vote YES! in the Legal Information Clinic Fee Referendum from March 20 – 26!

The Legal Information Clinic at McGill (LICM) is currently running a graduate student referendum to increase fees from $2.00 to $4.50 per semester (excluding summer). The Education Graduate Students’ Society supports this referendum because the LICM offers a valuable and free service to graduate students in helping them understand and enforce their rights.

Notably, their Student Advocacy department advises and represents students with university policy-related disputes (such as thesis supervisor conflicts, funding disputes with McGill, remedies for stolen research, filing non-academic disciplinary complaints). They are the only service of this kind at McGill. They also provide McGill administration with feedback on upcoming policies from the perspective of students; for example, they recently commented on McGill’s Policy Against Sexual Violence. As well, they do legal research to answer students’ questions about various areas of the law (tenancy, family, employment, wills, etc.). The LICM needs additional funds to keep up with increased demand for their services, not to mention to keep up with inflation as graduate student fees have not increased since the fee was introduced in 1990.

We encourage you to vote Yes. For more information, please consult the LICM’s referendum page: licm.mcgill.ca/referendum2017
