Professional and Research Development 3_2021-2022

This award is open to all EGSS members regardless of whether the student is conducting research or not. It aims to provide you, the student, with the proper tools to complete your degree in a timely fashion and prepare you for life after your graduate studies. This form covers applicants seeking funding for both Professional Development OR Research Development. Funding is allocated based on a three-tiered system. Each tier corresponds to a percentage of the allocated annual budget of approximately $5,000 or as approved by the General Assembly this year. Applicants are ranked out of 21 points.

Tier 1 (15 points – 21 points) 10% (up to $250) with a total cap of $1,250 per term.
Tier 2 (8 points – 14 points) 7% (up to $175) with a total cap of $750 per term.
Tier 3 (0 points – 7 points) 5% (up to $125) with a total cap of $500 per term.

Professional Development: travel to a collegial workshop, conference or scholarly meeting to learn and develop a specific skill or acquire knowledge pertinent to your degree.

Research Development: travel to a conference outside of Montreal, QC to present their work, create meaningful connections, receive critical feedback, and broaden their knowledge by taking in expertise in their respective fields.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. All members of the Education Graduate Students’ Society are eligible to apply for the award. This includes non-thesis and international students.
  2. Students are eligible to receive a maximum of one (1) Professional/Research Development  per academic year. For example, students who receive funding in the Fall semester do not qualify for funding in the Winter or Summer semesters of the same academic year.
  3. Students who are receiving direct financial support to attend the conference/scholarly meeting from their supervisor/ department are not eligible for this award
  4. Priority will be given to students who do not hold a bursary, scholarship, or fellowship of over $15,000 for this academic year.
  5. Applicants applying for research development must be presenters (paper, poster, etc.) at an academic workshop or conference that is online or requires travel outside of Greater Montreal.
  6. When the number of eligible applications exceeds the number of scholarships available in each category, a random draw will decide the winners.

Required Application Documents

  1. A completed  Application Form
  2. Proof of Enrolment: Log into your MINERVA account and do the following:
    • Log into MINERVA
    • Select <Student Menu>
    • Select <Student Records Menu>
    • Select <Letters – Proof of Enrolment>
    • Under <Term and Status>: Select the academic term/year in which your conference is being held.
    • Under <Type of Letter>: Select <Proof of Enrolment/Graduation>
    • Click Submit/Print and save and attach the generated letter as a PDF to upload in application
  3. Proof of Travel Purchase/or Participation
    • i.e. scan/screenshot/email confirmation of Bus, Train, Flight ticket
  4. Proof of Participation
    • confirmation of paid conference/workshop fee
    • confirmation of accepted presentation/poster/panel etc.
    • *if not available at the time of application, proof of submission or a copy of the conference program is acceptable. A signed and dated attestation from your supervisor or your program director indicating your name and the conference/workshop you will attend is also acceptable.
    • *Proof of participation is required prior to payment of the award

Save your documents in PDF format with the following title: Travel Award (SEMESTER, YEAR) – Last name, First name. If possible, please merge all documents into a single PDF upload.

Disclaimer
According to 5.3.3.4.1 in the EGSS constitution, please note that the award eligible recipient has one (1) month after EGSS has notified the award winner to accept the travel award. If the award eligible recipient fails to notify EGSS whether they will accept the travel award or not at the end of one month, this will result in a forfeiture of the award.
Furthermore, upon acceptance of the award, students have 3 months to pick up the award at EGSS or notify EGSS that they intend to pick up the award at a later date. Failure to do so within the time limit will result in a forfeiture of the award.
